BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders pose unique challenges, affecting individuals physiologically and socially. This study addresses the fundamental question of how adherence to exercise programs impacts those with substance use disorders, examining both in-person and online interventions. METHODS: A 12-week analysis involving 26 participants assessed physical fitness, strength, and quality of life. Participants were categorized into in-person and online exercise groups, with their adherence tracked through attendance and a dedicated app. RESULTS: The in-person group exhibited higher adherence rates and significant improvements, in contrast to the challenges encountered by the online groups, particularly in substance use disorder cohorts. Statistical analyses highlighted these differences, emphasizing the pivotal role of the exercise program delivery format. CONCLUSIONS: This research advocates for hybrid models, blending professional supervision with online flexibility, recognizing the distinct challenges of substance use disorders. Insights from this study will contribute to shaping more effective, personalized interventions in the complex landscape of substance use disorders, offering guidance for advancing treatment strategies.

Pollution in aquatic ecosystems has been increasing drastically worldwide changing their water quality. Therefore, species must be adapted to these new scenarios. In Aguascalientes City, four representative urban reservoirs contain lead in the water column and extremely high concentrations of sediments. Therefore, an analysis was conducted to evaluate the resilience of zooplankton species to lead exposure in each reservoir using dormant and organisms. Results demonstrated a decrease range from 57.5 to 22.5% in overall diapausing egg hatching rate, while survivorship rate also decreased from 98 to 54% when organisms were exposed to the water of the four reservoirs and increasing lead concentrations. When Pb exposure increased, results showed a global negative effect on both hatching rate (decreasing from 58 to 30% at 0.09 mg L-1) and survivorship levels (decreasing from 100% to 0.07% at 0.09 mg L-1). We provide Species Sensitivity Distribution for both water reservoir dilutions and lead concentration to analyze diapausing eggs hatching and survivorship of offspring in the presence of same polluted conditions or lead of the autochthonous species found in reservoirs. Furthermore, specific analysis with two populations of the cladoceran Moina macrocopa showed clear dissimilar hatching patterns that suggested a different adaptive mechanism. Niagara population shows a hatching rate of approximately 25% in the first two days of reservoir water exposure, while UAA population drastically increased hatching rate to 75% on exposure at day seven. We provide the first record of bioaccumulation in ephippia of M. macrocopa.

RESUMO

Analysis of bone marrow aspirates (BMAs) is an essential step in the diagnosis of hematological disorders. This analysis is usually performed based on a visual examination of samples under a conventional optical microscope, which involves a labor-intensive process, limited by clinical experience and subject to high observer variability. In this work, we present a comprehensive digital microscopy system that enables BMA analysis for cell type counting and differentiation in an efficient and objective manner. This system not only provides an accessible and simple method to digitize, store, and analyze BMA samples remotely but is also supported by an Artificial Intelligence (AI) pipeline that accelerates the differential cell counting process and reduces interobserver variability. It has been designed to integrate AI algorithms with the daily clinical routine and can be used in any regular hospital workflow.

Understanding the mechanical failure modes of lithium-ion battery [Li-ion batteries (LIBs)] electrodes is exceptionally important for enabling high specific energy and flexible LIB technologies. In this work, the failure modes of lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) cathodes under repeated bending and the role of the polymer binder in improving the mechanical durability of the LCO electrodes for use in flexible LIBs are investigated. Mechanical and electrochemical evaluations of LCO electrodes (areal capacity of ≥2.5 mA h cm-2) employing poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) binder were carried out, followed by extensive optical and electron microscopies. We find that the molecular weight (MW) of the PVDF significantly influenced the surface and bulk microstructure of the LCO electrodes, particularly the distribution of carbon additive and binder, which plays a crucial role in affecting the mechanical and electrochemical properties of the electrodes. Multiple mechanical failure modes (e.g., surface scratches and microcracks) observed in the LCO electrodes subjected to repeated bending originated from the use of low MW PVDF; these failure modes were successfully mitigated by using a high MW PVDF. Remarkably, the optimized flexible LCO electrode incorporating high MW PVDF showed comparable discharge capacity retention during galvanostatic cycling after repeated bending (7000 cycles at 50 mm bending diameter) to electrodes not subjected to the repeated bending. This study highlights the importance of carrying out a comprehensive investigation of the failure mechanisms in flexible electrodes, which identified the pivotal role of the PVDF MW in the electrode microstructure and its effects on the electrode resilience to failure during repeated bending.

Data regarding the effects of binary metal mixtures in marine zooplankton are scarce, particularly for rotifers. We examined the toxicity of 21 binary equitoxic mixtures of As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Hg, Pb, and Zn on the euryhaline rotifer Proales similis. The toxic units (TU50) revealed that 20 of these binary mixtures exhibited synergistic effects (TU50 < 1.00). The AsHg mixture showed a strong antagonistic effect (TU50 = 2.39), whereas the HgCu interaction exhibited a significant synergistic effect (TU50 = 0.29) on P. similis. TU50 values were <0.60 in all cases that showed synergism (80 %). Regarding the MIXTOX analysis, 13 binary mixtures presented some level of synergism, while two mixtures presented only additivity. Results emphasize the need for environmental agencies to revise and readjust protection guidelines for marine biota in response to the evident synergistic effects occurring at metal mixtures concentrations below the current permissible limits.

The genus Aspergillus harbors human infection-causing pathogens and is involved in the complex one-health challenge of antifungal resistance. Here, a 6-year retrospective study was conducted with Aspergillus spp. isolated from patients with invasive, chronic, and clinically suspected aspergillosis in a tertiary teaching hospital. A total of 64 Aspergillus spp. clinical isolates were investigated regarding molecular identification, biofilm, virulence in Galleria mellonella, antifungal susceptibility, and resistance to amphotericin B and azoles. Aspergillus section Fumigati (A. fumigatus sensu stricto, 62.5%) and section Flavi (A. flavus, 20.3%; A. parasiticus, 14%; and A. tamarii, 3.1%) have been identified. Aspergillus section Flavi clinical isolates were more virulent than section Fumigati clinical isolates. Furthermore, scant evidence supports a link between biofilm formation and virulence. The susceptibility of the Aspergillus spp. clinical isolates to itraconazole, posaconazole, voriconazole, and amphotericin B was evaluated. Most Aspergillus spp. clinical isolates (67.2%) had an AMB MIC value equal to or above 2 µg/mL, warning of a higher probability of therapeutic failure in the region under study. In general, the triazoles presented MIC values above the epidemiological cutoff value. The high triazole MIC values of A. fumigatus s.s. clinical isolates were investigated by sequencing the promoter region and cyp51A locus. The Cyp51A amino acid substitutions F46Y, M172V, N248T, N248K, D255E, and E427K were globally detected in 47.5% of A. fumigatus s.s. clinical isolates, and most of them are associated with high triazole MICs. Even so, the findings support voriconazole or itraconazole as the first therapeutic choice for treating Aspergillus infections. This study emphasizes the significance of continued surveillance of Aspergillus spp. infections to help overcome the gap in knowledge of the global fungal burden of infections and antifungal resistance, supporting public health initiatives.

C. berlandieri ssp. berlandieri (C. berlandieri) is one of the most common members of the group of plants known as quelites, which are dark leafy greens widely consumed in Mexico. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of two drying procedures (oven drying and freeze-drying/lyophilization) on the polyphenolic composition, antioxidant capacity, and proximal chemical analysis of C. berlandieri leaves and inflorescences (raw or boiled). The results indicated that the raw freeze-dried samples had higher amounts (p < 0.05) of total phenolic compounds, total flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity, mainly in the inflorescence. The oven-dried samples showed an increased concentration of polyphenols after boiling, while the lyophilized samples showed a slightly decreased concentration. The drying process was observed to have little impact on the proximal chemical composition. Quantification by UPLC-DAD-ESI-QToF/MS identified up to 23 individual phenolic compounds, with freeze-dried samples showing higher amounts of individual compounds compared with oven-dried. Procyanidin B2 was found exclusively in the inflorescences. The inflorescences have a higher content of phenolic compounds and greater antioxidant capacity than the leaves. Regardless of the drying process, the leaves and inflorescences of C. berlandieri contain an interesting variety of phenolic compounds that may have beneficial effects on health.

INTRODUCTION: Human actions have influenced climate changes around the globe, causing extreme weather phenomena and impacting communities worldwide. Climate change has caused, directly or indirectly, health effects such as injury and physical injuries, which impact morbidity and mortality. Similarly, there is evidence that exposure to climatic catastrophes has serious repercussions on psychological well-being, and rising temperatures and drought have detrimental effects on mental health.Despite the recent effort of researchers to develop specific instruments to assess the effects of climate change on mental health, the evidence on measures of its impact is still scarce, and the constructs are heterogeneous. The aim of this scoping review is to describe the instruments developed and validated to assess the impact of mental health related to climate change. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This review is registered at Open Science Framework (https://osf.io/zdmbk). This scoping review will follow the reporting elements chosen for systematic review and meta-analysis (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). We proposed a PO question, as it places no restrictions on the participants (P), and the outcome (O) are measurement instruments on mental health related to climate change. A search will be conducted in different databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO). We will use an open-source artificial intelligence screening tool (ASReview LAB) for the title and abstract review. The full-text review will be performed by three researchers. If there is a disagreement between two independent reviewers, a third reviewer will take the final decision. We will use the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments tool to assess the risk of bias for each included study. The review will be conducted starting in September 2023. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The planned scoping review does not require ethical approval since it will not involve an ethical risk to the participants. The results obtained from this study will be presented at conferences, congresses and scientific publications.

In fungal pathogens the cell wall plays an important role in host-pathogen interactions because its molecular components (e.g., polysaccharides and proteins) may trigger immune responses during infection. GPI-anchored proteins represent the main protein class in the fungal cell wall where they can perform several functions, such as cell wall remodeling and adhesion to host tissues. Genomic analysis has identified the complement of GPI-anchored proteins in many fungal pathogens, but the function has remained unknown for most of them. Here, we conducted an RNA expression analysis of GPI-anchored proteins of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis which causes paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), an important human systemic mycosis endemic in Latin America. The expression of the GPI-anchored proteins was analyzed by quantitative PCR in both the mycelium and yeast forms. qPCR analysis revealed that the transcript levels of 22 of them were increased in hyphae and 10 in yeasts, respectively, while 14 did not show any significant difference in either form. Furthermore, we cloned 46 open reading frames and purified their corresponding GPI-anchored proteins in the budding yeast. Immunoblot and ELISA analysis of four purified GPI-anchored proteins revealed immune reactivity of these proteins against sera obtained from PCM patients. The information obtained in this study provides valuable information about the expression of many GPI-anchored proteins of unknown function. In addition, based on our immune analysis, some GPI-anchored proteins are expressed during infection and therefore, they might serve as good candidates for the development of new diagnostic methods.

COVID-19-Associated Pulmonary Aspergillosis (CAPA) is a relatively common complication in patients with severe forms of the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Diagnosing and confirming CAPA is challenging. In this study, Aspergillus spp. isolation in respiratory specimens from patients with COVID-19 was evaluated for identifying cases of CAPA. In 2020‒2021, 17 Aspergillus spp. were isolated from 15 COVID-19 patients admitted to a university hospital in Brazil. Patient records were retrospectively reviewed to obtain clinical-epidemiological data and other markers of Aspergillus spp. infection and then compared with the ECMM/ISHAM criteria for defining CAPA. Probable CAPA was defined in 5/10 patients, who had Aspergillus spp. isolated from Bronchoalveolar Lavage (BAL) or a positive galactomannan blood test. Additionally, anti-Aspergillus antibodies were detected in two of these patients, during active or follow-up phases of CAPA. In another seven patients with Aspergillus spp. isolated from tracheobronchial aspirate or sputum, CAPA was presumed, mainly due to deterioration of clinical conditions and new lung imaging suggestive of fungal infection. Antifungal agents to control CAPA, particularly voriconazole, were used in 9/15 cases. In cases of probable CAPA and remaining patients, clinical conditions and comorbidities were similar, with lethality being high, at 60% and 71%, respectively. The number of CAPA cases defined by scientific criteria was lower than that assumed in the clinical context. This was largely due to the lack of BAL collection for fungal culture and the non-intensive use of other markers of invasive aspergillosis. The isolation of Aspergillus spp. in different respiratory specimens should alert clinicians to the diagnosis of CAPA.

An integral analysis of the acute and chronic toxicity, bioaccumulation, sites of entry, and distribution of four trace metals: copper, iron, lead, and nickel, and the non-trace metal mercury were performed in the ciliate Paramecium caudatum. Mercury was the fastest metal accumulated, and the most toxic. The sensitivity of Paramecium caudatum to the five metals tested (Cu, Fe, Hg, Ni, and Zn) falls in the range of other ciliate species. We observed similarities between the toxicity of the five metals to the ciliate P. caudatum with the rotifer Euchlanis dilatata: (a) Mercury was the most toxic metal in terms of acute and body burdens. (b) Acute values were very similar in both species, Hg as the most toxic and Fe as the less toxic, (c) the vacuole/ingestion chronic tests were more sensitive than growth inhibition chronic tests. These analyses would ideally help generate safer guidelines for protecting aquatic biota.

Poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) is one of the most commonly used drug carriers in nanomedicines because of its biodegradability, biocompatibility and low toxicity. However, the physico-chemical characterization and study of drug release are often lacking the investigation of the glass transition temperature (Tg), which is an excellent indicator of drug release behavior. In addition, the residual surfactant used during the synthesis of nanoparticles will change the glass transition temperature. We thus prepared PLGA nanoparticles with polymeric (poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)) and ionic (didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DMAB)) surfactant to investigate their influence on the glass transition temperature. Determination of Tg in dry and wet conditions were carried out. The use of concentrated surfactant during synthesis resulted in a larger amount of residual surfactant in the resulting particles. Increasing residual PVA content resulted in an increase in particle Tg for all but the most concentrated PVA concentrations, while increasing residual DMAB content resulted in no significant change in particle Tg. With the presence of residual surfactant, the Tg of particle and bulk samples measured in wet conditions is much lower than that in dry conditions, except for bulk PLGA containing the ionic surfactant, which may be related to the plasticizing effect of the DMAB molecules. Notably, the Tg of both particles in wet conditions is approaching physiological temperatures where subtle changes in Tg could have dramatic effects on drug release properties. In conclusion, the selection of surfactant and the remaining amount of surfactant are crucial parameters to utilize in designing the physico-chemical properties of PLGA particles.

The efficiency of an electrochemical oxidation/reduction process strongly depends on the working electrode's surface area to volume ratio. By making electrodes flexible and employing different configurations such as roll-to-roll membrane, the surface area to volume ratio can be enhanced, therefore improving the overall efficiency of electrochemical processes. Conductive polymers emerge as a new framework to enable alternative electrochemical water treatment cell configurations. Self-standing polypyrrole flexible electrodes were synthesized by electropolymerization and evaluated on the treatment of an oxyanion pollutant: nitrite. Mechanical characterization through stress-strain curves and bending tests demonstrated high electrode resilience that sustained over 1000 bending cycles without impacting mechanical integrity or electrocatalytic responses. The electrocatalytic response towards nitrite reduction was assessed under linear scan voltammetry (LSV) and removal performance evaluated under potentiostatic conditions reaching 79% abatement of initial concentrations of nitrite of 15 mg/L [NO2--N]. Self-standing flexible electrodes appear as a novel framework to enable modular compact water treatment unit designs that maximize the electrode area/volume ratio and substitute expensive platinum group metal (PGMs) electrocatalysts.

Paracoccidioidomycosis is a systemic mycosis found mainly in South America and is the most prevalent endemic and systemic mycosis in Brazil. The purpose of this paper was to report the case of a male patient who developed peritonitis caused by Paracoccidioides spp. Forty-eight-year-old, male patient, with type I Diabetes mellitus and chronic kidney disease who was undergoing a Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) program. After eighteen months of peritoneal dialysis, the patient developed turbidity of the peritoneal fluid and was diagnosed with peritonitis. Direct mycological examination of the peritoneal fluid revealed yeasts with morphology suggestive of Paracoccidioides spp. The patient was treated with sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (1,600 mg/320 mg dose/day) for 61 days, but he died because a bacterial septic shock. The diagnosis of opportunistic PCM peritonitis was later confirmed by autopsy and Paracoccidioides spp. isolation. This is the first reported case of a patient on CAPD who experienced complications due peritonitis caused by opportunistic PCM.

Despite the high incidence of urogenital carcinoma (UGC) in California sea lions stranded along California, no UGC has been reported in other areas of their distribution; however, cell morphologies typical of premalignant states have been found. Risk factors for UGC include high of organochlorines and infection with a gammaherpesvirus, OtHV-1, but the importance of the bacteriome for epithelial status remains unknown. We characterized the genital bacteriome of adult female California sea lions along their distribution in the Gulf of California and examined whether the diversity and abundance of the bacteriome varied spatially, whether there were detectable differences in the bacteriome between healthy and altered epithelia, and whether the bacteriome was different in California sea lions infected with OtHV-1 or papillomavirus. We detected 2270 ASVs in the genital samples, of which 35 met the criteria for inclusion in the core bacteriome. Fusobacteriia and Clostridia were present in all samples, at high abundances, and Actinobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, and Campylobacteria were also well-represented. Alpha diversity and abundance of the California sea lion genital bacteriome varied geographically. The abundance of bacterial ASVs varied depending on the genital epithelial status and inflammation, with differences driven by classes Fusobacteriia, Clostridia, Campylobacteria and Alphaproteobacteria. Alpha diversity and abundance were lowest in samples in which OtHV-1 was detected, and highest those with papillomavirus. Our study is the first investigation of how the bacteriome is related to epithelial status in a wild marine species prone to developing cancer.

Haemophilus influenzae is a human-adapted bacterial pathogen that causes airway infections. Bacterial and host elements associated with the fitness of H. influenzae within the host lung are not well understood. Here, we exploited the strength of in vivo-omic analyses to study host-microbe interactions during infection. We used in vivo transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) for genome-wide profiling of both host and bacterial gene expression during mouse lung infection. Profiling of murine lung gene expression upon infection showed upregulation of lung inflammatory response and ribosomal organization genes, and downregulation of cell adhesion and cytoskeleton genes. Transcriptomic analysis of bacteria recovered from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid samples from infected mice showed a significant metabolic rewiring during infection, which was highly different from that obtained upon bacterial in vitro growth in an artificial sputum medium suitable for H. influenzae. In vivo RNA-seq revealed upregulation of bacterial de novo purine biosynthesis, genes involved in non-aromatic amino acid biosynthesis, and part of the natural competence machinery. In contrast, the expression of genes involved in fatty acid and cell wall synthesis and lipooligosaccharide decoration was downregulated. Correlations between upregulated gene expression and mutant attenuation in vivo were established, as observed upon purH gene inactivation leading to purine auxotrophy. Likewise, the purine analogs 6-thioguanine and 6-mercaptopurine reduced H. influenzae viability in a dose-dependent manner. These data expand our understanding of H. influenzae requirements during infection. In particular, H. influenzae exploits purine nucleotide synthesis as a fitness determinant, raising the possibility of purine synthesis as an anti-H. influenzae target. IMPORTANCE In vivo-omic strategies offer great opportunities for increased understanding of host-pathogen interplay and for identification of therapeutic targets. Here, using transcriptome sequencing, we profiled host and pathogen gene expression during H. influenzae infection within the murine airways. Lung pro-inflammatory gene expression reprogramming was observed. Moreover, we uncovered bacterial metabolic requirements during infection. In particular, we identified purine synthesis as a key player, highlighting that H. influenzae may face restrictions in purine nucleotide availability within the host airways. Therefore, blocking this biosynthetic process may have therapeutic potential, as supported by the observed inhibitory effect of 6-thioguanine and 6-mercaptopurine on H. influenzae growth. Together, we present key outcomes and challenges for implementing in vivo-omics in bacterial airway pathogenesis. Our findings provide metabolic insights into H. influenzae infection biology, raising the possibility of purine synthesis as an anti-H. influenzae target and of purine analog repurposing as an antimicrobial strategy against this pathogen.

Artificial intelligence, particularly the growth of neural network research and development, has become an invaluable tool for data analysis, offering unrivalled solutions for image generation, natural language processing, and personalised suggestions. In the meantime, biomedicine has been presented as one of the pressing challenges of the 21st century. The inversion of the age pyramid, the increase in longevity, and the negative environment due to pollution and bad habits of the population have led to a necessity of research in the methodologies that can help to mitigate and fight against these changes. The combination of both fields has already achieved remarkable results in drug discovery, cancer prediction or gene activation. However, challenges such as data labelling, architecture improvements, interpretability of the models and translational implementation of the proposals still remain. In haematology, conventional protocols follow a stepwise approach that includes several tests and doctor-patient interactions to make a diagnosis. This procedure results in significant costs and workload for hospitals. In this paper, we present an artificial intelligence model based on neural networks to support practitioners in the identification of different haematological diseases using only rutinary and inexpensive blood count tests. In particular, we present both binary and multiclass classification of haematological diseases using a specialised neural network architecture where data is studied and combined along it, taking into account the clinical knowledge of the problem, obtaining results up to 96% accuracy for the binary classification experiment. Furthermore, we compare this method against traditional machine learning algorithms such as gradient boosting decision trees and transformers for tabular data. The use of these machine learning techniques could reduce the cost and decision time and improve the quality of life for both specialists and patients while producing more precise diagnoses.

Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a systemic fungal infection caused by Paracoccidioides species. Chylothorax is a rare complication of PCM. A 16-year-old adolescent presented daily fever, lymphadenomegaly, sweating, weight loss, ventilatory-dependent pain, and dysphagia, which confirmed PCM. During treatment, the patient developed chylothorax and chylous ascites. Chronic inflammatory and fibrotic lymphadenopathy may obstruct lymphatic vessels, resulting in the extravasation of lymph into the abdomen or pleural cavities. Chylothorax is one of several complications of PCM and can lead to respiratory insufficiency, even in patients undergoing antifungal therapy.

BACKGROUND: The hemorrhage risk of unruptured and untreated cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) has been shown to be higher for female patients than male patients in their child bearing ages. Although it has been neurosurgical practice to advise female patients in their childbearing ages to postpone pregnancy until proven AVM obliteration, there is no literature consensus regarding this potential hemorrhage risk increase. OBJECTIVE: To accurately quantify the risk increase for AVM hemorrhage during pregnancy. METHODS: This study is based on data from previous publications, consisting of known age at the first AVM hemorrhage in 3425 patients. The risk increase during pregnancy could be calculated from the difference in age distribution for the first AVM hemorrhage between male patients and female patients, taking the average pregnancy time per female into account. A comparison was also made with data for all hospital discharges (13 751) in Germany 2008 to 2018 with the diagnosis brain AVM. RESULTS: The average pregnancy and puerperium time was 1.54 years per female in the patient population, which was used to determine the annual AVM hemorrhage risk during pregnancy to be around 9%. The increased risk during pregnancy was further evidenced by analysis of a subgroup of 105 female patients, for which pregnancy status at the time of hemorrhage was known. CONCLUSION: The quantified annual risk for AVM hemorrhage during pregnancy is about 3 times higher than that of male patients at corresponding age. This provides an important basis for advising female patients with patent AVMs about the increased risk for hemorrhage that a pregnancy would entail.

Amaranth has many interesting features, both nutritional and otherwise, that make it attractive as a food crop. Plants grown in greenhouses have higher yields but lower nutritional value compared to those grown in open fields. This prompted an interest in studying viable elicitors for the production of amaranth. Small hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentrations for foliar spraying from 0 to 18 mM have been used in greenhouse amaranth cultivation. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of foliar application of H2O2 megadoses on growth parameters, total phenolic compounds, condensed tannins, anthocyanins, and the antioxidant capacity of leaves and seeds of amaranth grown in a greenhouse setting. The seed of the Amaranthus hypochondriacus L. species was used. The concentrations of H2O2 analyzed were 0, 125, 250 and 400 mM, with 11 applications throughout the growing cycle. The variable data were subjected to an analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by a Tukey's post hoc test (95% CI, p < 0.05). The results on chlorophyll, growth parameters and proximal chemical analysis showed no statistical difference between the control group versus the treatment groups. A greater number of favorable changes in the different variables studied were observed with the 125 mM H2O2 treatment, including the increase in antioxidant capacity measured by FRAP. The seed showed a considerable increase in TFC with all treatments and responded better to the 250 mM H2O2 treatment in the case of DPPH (an increase of 30%) and TPC (an increase of 44%). A 28% increase in anthocyanin content was observed with the treatment of 400 mM H2O2. The use of H2O2 may be an appropriate strategy to enhance the production of antioxidant compounds in amaranth without affecting growth or its basic proximal chemical composition. More studies are required in this regard.
